Virginia Lloyd Monroe died February 1, 2016 at her home in Fayette. She was 85. Mrs. Monroe was born on March 15, 1930 in Shawnee, Oklahoma, to the late Ray Edgar Lloyd and Martha Harriett Hulen Lloyd. She graduated from Fayette High School in 1947 and attended Monticello School for Girls in Alton, Illinois (now Lewis and Clark Community College). She graduated from Central Methodist College in Fayette in 1970. She married John Arthur Monroe on March 12, 1948 in Alton, Illinois. He preceded her in death on May 21, 1983. Mrs. Monroe taught Art and English in Glasgow, Missouri, retiring in 1977. Active in many facets of community life, she served as a Girl Scout leader and Cub Scout leader. She was Central Methodist College co-coordinator of their second antique sale. She was on the Executive Board of the Ashby-Hodge Gallery of American Art. She worked as a volunteer for many years for the Ministerial Alliance Food Pantry. She was Chairman of the Outreach Committee at her church, Paul H. Linn Memorial United Methodist Church. She was a member of LTS Club, RD Club, Ganador Club, 26 Club, UMW Lydia Circle, and University Club of Columbia. Survivors include three sons, Mark David Monroe and his wife Charity (Mills Gilbert) of Peoria, Illinois, John Fletcher Monroe and his wife Nicky (Mary L. Bottoms) of Chico, California, Charles Gregory Monroe and his wife Robin (Saltz) of Durham, North Carolina. Three grandchildren, Jason Fletcher Monroe and his wife Angela (Michelle Wieshaup) of Wellington, Colorado, Kathryn Anne Monroe of Fort Collins, Colorado, and Jonathan Monroe of Durham, North Carolina. Two great-grandchildren, Krystal Maroon Monroe of Fort Collins, Colorado, and Jenna Brooklyn Monroe of Wellington, Colorado. Two nephews, Michael Lloyd and wife Ann of Boston, Massachusetts, and Richard Hehr and wife Brenda of Overland Park, Kansas. She was also preceded in death by her sister Dorothy Lloyd Hehr, and nephew Steven Hehr. Funeral services will be held on February 10, 2016 at Paul H. Linn Memorial United Methodist Church at 409 N. Church St, Fayette. Pastor David Hutchison will officiate. Visitation will start at 10 am, with the funeral service at 11 am and with burial following in Walnut Ridge Cemetery.
