Norbert Westhues 1918 – 2016 Lifelong Glasgow resident, Norbert Westhues passed away at Golden Living Center in Glasgow April 20, 2016. He was 97 years of age. Norbert Bernard Westhues was born June 27, 1918 in Glasgow to Theodore and Helena (Moorman) Westhues. He attended St. Mary’s School in Glasgow. Norbert married Ruth Echele March 27, 1943 and together they enjoyed over 73 years of marriage. Norbert valiantly served his country in the U.S. Army Air Corp. during WWII. He earned the rank of Staff Sergeant as a gunner, and received four bronze stars and an Air Medal with three Bronze Clusters, for his heroic service in combat. Mr. Westhues farmed most of his life. He had also worked as a warehouse foreman at Kellwood Industries, and as a yardman at Standard Havens Steel Fabrication Plant in Glasgow for a number of years. Norbert was a 4th degree member of the Knights of Columbus, a devout Catholic, and longtime member of St. Mary’s Parish in Glasgow. He is survived by his wife Ruth of Fayette; 11 children, Charlotte (Jerry) Niemeier of Harrisburg, Ron (Becky) Westhues of Columbia, Gerri (Rex) White of Plano, TX, Bea Westhues of Kansas City, Mary Lee (Eddie) Nanneman and Judy Poeschl, both of Salisbury, MO, Art (Karen) Westhues of Liberty, MO, Barbara (Kevin) Pickett of Woolridge, MO, Cindy (David) Wells of Armstrong, Debbie (Terry) Lackland of Glasgow and Rick (Deb) Westhues of Marion, IA; two sisters, Rita Tebbe of Glasgow and Sister Mary Westhues of Chicago, IL; 26 grandchildren and 31 great grandchildren. Aside from his parents Norbert was preceded in death by three brothers, Ted, Ray and infant brother, Joseph; an infant sister, Helen; infant grandson, Kenny Nanneman; daughter-in-law, Claudia Westhues; and a son-in-law, Joe Poeschl. A Mass of Christian Burial will be 11 AM, Saturday, April 23, 2016 at St. Mary’s Church in Glasgow, with Father Alex Gabriel officiating. Visitation will be 6 to 8 PM Friday evening at the Friemonth-Freese Funeral Home in Glasgow, with a Prayer Service and Rosary at 8 PM. Burial with full military honors will follow the service in Washington Cemetery. Memorials are suggested to St. Mary’s School or Church in care of the funeral home.
