Well known Fayette resident Lila C. Lawson died Sunday, May 29, 2016, at Fayette Caring Center. She was 89 years of age. The daughter of Richard B. and Opal Charity ( Hughes) Copeland, Mrs. Lawson was born in Howard County on October 7, 1926. She grew up in central Missouri and was a 1944 graduate of Glasgow High School. On January 29, 1947, Lila Copeland was united in marriage to Harmon David Lawson, Jr. at the Copeland family farm near Glasgow. Along with her role as wife and mother, Mrs. Lawson worked with her husband his business as an electrical technician in Glasgow. She was also head of food service for Glasgow Public Schools and later was Dietitian for Keller Memorial Hospital in Fayette. As his health declined, she was care-giver for her husband until his death in 2008. After their move to Fayette, the Lawsons were active members of the Fayette First Christian Church. When her move to Fayette Caring Center made getting to church difficult, Mrs Lawson continued her church involvement as a leader of the group there attending church via the internet. Mrs. Lawson is survived by her son, John (Punky) Lawson of Fayette and by her three daughters; Patricia (Paul) Abernathy of Fort Worth, TX, Teresa (John) Fine of Oologah, OK, and Gail (Ken) Brink of Perryville, MO. Also surviving are nine grandchildren; Nikki Medlin, Trisha Clark, David Lawson, Richard Fine, Melinda Dale, Nathaniel and Amber Brink, Jaclyn Ware, and Keith Abernathy, and twenty-two great-grandchildren. Other survivors include her brother, Richard Copeland, Jr, of Glasgow and her sister-in-law, Ruby Ritchie of West Monroe, LA. Along with her husband, she was preceded in death by her parents and her sister, Joy Duren. Funeral services for Lila Lawson will be held at the Fayette First Christian Church on Wednesday, June 1 at 2:00 PM. With Revs. Paula Ritchie, Richard Fine, and Lewis O’dneal officiating. The family will greet friends from 1:00 PM until the hour of service at the church. Burial will follow Sulphur Springs Cemetery with David Lawson, Nathaniel Brink, Richard Fine, Jeremy Dale, Charles Ray Guthrie, and Donnie Arnold serving as pallbearers. Gordon Medlin will serve as honorary pallbearer.
