Cecile Thorpe 1920 – 2016 Cecile M. Thorpe of Columbia, formerly of Fayette, passed away Oct. 27, 2016 at Boone Hospital Center in Columbia. She was 96 years old. Cecile was born September 7, 1920 to W.F. and Bettie (Fife) Markland. She married Dale Thorpe on June 4, 1939 and they were married for 60 years until his death January 23, 2000. Cecile joined the effort during WWII by working in a torpedo plant in St. Louis while Dale was serving in the Navy aboard the USS Chanticleer. She later worked for the University of Missouri Extension Center and the Democrat Leader in Fayette. She and Dale enjoyed bowling and dancing to big band music. She was an avid knitter and had made hundreds of personalized Christmas stockings, and in recent years made numerous children’s sweaters for Lamb’s Wool, a non-profit knitting project for Operation Christmas Child. Cecile is survived by a son, John (Marilyn) Thorpe of Ashland, and a daughter, Carol (Larry) Sommerer of Stockton; four grandchildren and 8 great-grandchildren. In addition to her parents and husband, Cecile was preceded in death by an infant daughter. Visitation will be Noon-1 PM, Tuesday, November 1, 2016 at Friemonth-Freese Funeral Home in Fayette. A graveside service will be held at Walnut Ridge Cemetery in Fayette immediately following the visitation, with Bro. Wyatt Howerton officiating. Memorial contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society, in care of the funeral home.
