Blanche Bertha (Sander) Schafer of Fayette, Missouri passed away on May 04, 2017 at Glasgow Gardens in Glasgow, Missouri at the age of 94. A private family service and burial will be held at St. James United Church of Christ in Tilsit, Missouri on Monday May 8th. On May 10, 1922 Blanche Bertha Sander was born in Gordonville, Missouri to the late Herman William Sander and Bertha Christine (Suedekum) Sander. Blanche grew up in the Cape Girardeau area. She was a 1940 graduate of Jackson High School and attended two years of college at SEMO University in Cape Girardeau and received a teaching certificate. During her early years following high school she taught in Gordonville and Sandy Ridge schools. She met Peyton Francis Schafer at a rural schools function. On November 6, 1943, she married Peyton in Sikeston, Missouri while he was serving in the United States Army. Following World War II she lived in Columbia, Missouri while Peyton finished his education at the University of Missouri. They lived in Butler, Appleton City, and eventually Bolivar, Missouri where they resided from 1956 to 1995. After her husband’s death she moved to Fayette, Missouri. Blanche liked to consider herself a Home Economist; she was a great cook, gardener, seamstress, and homemaker. She was a staunch believer and supporter of education, and was proud that all of her children and grandchildren received a college education. She also enjoyed cooking for the Bolivar Kiwanis Club, Bolivar Methodist Church functions, and for friends and family. She was an active member in the United Methodist Church & UMW in Appleton City and Bolivar Missouri; and later the Linn Memorial Methodist Church of Fayette. She also was involved in the Extension Homemaker group of Bolivar and Polk County, Bolivar Community Concert Series, Facts & Fiction Federated Club, Eastern Star, the MMM Club of Fayette, and Howard County Retired Teachers. She and her husband Peyton were also active in the Bolivar American Legion. Blanche leaves to cherish her memory her son Gale and wife Ann (Shockley) Schafer of Fayette, Missouri; daughter Sandra Kaye Schafer of Florissant, Missouri: and daughter Cynthia Jane (Schafer) McCutcheon of Fayette, Missouri; two grandchildren, Christopher Schafer and wife Alexis (Lawson) Schafer of Ozark, Missouri, and Elizabeth (Schafer) Harrison of Columbia Missouri; eight great grandchildren: Joshua, Skylar, Keller and Jackson Schafer of Ozark, Mo.; Jack, Clay and Lillyan Harrison of Columbia, Mo.; Kennedy (Jones) Bernhardt of Warrensburg; and one great-great grandson, Kingsley Bernhardt of Warrensburg. She is also survived by a sister, Ruth (Sander) Nischwitz of Gordonville, Missouri; a brother and sister-in-law, Ralph and Jean (Tanner) Sander of Golden, Colorado; a sister-in-law Martha Stickler of Cape Girardeau and a number of nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents Herman and Bertha Sander; husband Peyton Schafer; brother Raymond Sander; sister Edna Lorberg; and son-in-law Chuck McCutcheon. The family is very appreciative of the care given by Dr. Hope Tinker and the caring staff of “Glasgow Gardens” nursing home. In lieu of flowers, a donation may be made to Linn Memorial United Methodist of Fayette, Missouri; Bolivar United Methodist Church in Bolivar, Missouri: or St. James United Church of Christ in Tilsit, Missouri.
