Robert E. Shirley 1939-2017 Howard County resident, Robert Shirley passed away September 27, 2017 at University Hospital in Columbia. He was 78 years of age. Robert Eugene Shirley was born March 15, 1939 in Bartlesville, OK to John Thomas and Louise (Laprade) Shirley. He was a graduate of Lamar High School. Bob married Lucille Mae Thomas March 11, 1961 in Kansas City, KS and she preceded him in death November 16, 2000. Bob also graduated from the Missouri State Highway Patrol Training Academy in Rolla, MO. He was a Missouri State Highway Patrolman for 26 years retiring April 1, 1994. Bob was an accomplished carpenter and mechanic. He helped build several homes in Fayette and helped with the building of Shepherd of Hills Lutheran Church in which he was a member. He worked on many Volkswagen cars over the years. He also enjoyed raising dogs and going to the Casino and playing five card poker. Bob is survived by two sons, David of Lake Ozark and Jeff of Columbia, MO, one daughter, Debbie (Dennis) Nation of Fayette, two sisters, Margaret JoAnn Gerard and Mary Lou Hilton both of Carthage, MO, one brother, John “Tom” (Marian) Shirley of Tahlequah, OK, longtime friend and companion, Shirley Dougherty of Fayette, three grandchildren, Denise (Mike Cunningham) Hall, Dana (Joe) Dodson and Danny (Laci Snider) Nation and eight great grandsons along with numerous nieces and nephews. Besides his parents and wife, he was preceded in death by one sister, Connie Sanders and a brother-in-law, Thurman Hilton. A memorial service will be held 2 PM, Sunday, October 1, 2017 at the Friemonth-Freese Funeral Home in Fayette with Rev. Harold Young officiating. Visitation will be two hours before the service from noon to 2 PM.
