Glasgow resident, Joe Gibbs, 72, passed away at his home on April 25, 2020, after a hard-fought battle against cancer. Joseph Dent Gibbs was born March 24, 1948, in rural Glasgow, Howard County, Mo., a son to the late John and Eleanor (Johnson) Gibbs. He graduated from Glasgow High School with the class of 1966. On February 26, 1977, he married Doris Haeffner-Craig in Las Vegas, Nv. Together, they’ve enjoyed over 43 years of marriage. In 1973, Joe started working as a laborer in the construction industry and became a member of the Local 955, Laborers’ International Union of North America. Joe continued to work for the union until his retirement in 2008. Post retirement, Joe stayed an active member of Local 955 retired laborers’ union. He was currently serving as Vice President, a position he’s held since 2015. Joe loved gardening and sharing the fruits of his labor. Oftentimes, Joe would generously share his produce with friends, family, and people in the community. He also enjoyed spending time with his grandchildren and family, picking pecans and watching and attending sporting events. Survivors include his wife, Doris, of the home; three children, Kim (Demetrius) Manning of Kansas City, MO, Joey (Samantha) Gibbs of Glasgow, MO and Stacey (Ross) Sanders of Columbia, MO; four grandchildren, Hilary and Haden Prentzler, Miranda Cooper and Rhealee Gibbs; sister, Mary Lou Gross of Oceanside, CA; three sisters-in law, Joan Gibbs of Liberty, MO, Anne Gibbs of Springdale, AR and Elaine Unger of New Haven, MO; brother-in-law, Joe Stevenson of Blue Springs, MO; and special niece, Judy (Larry) Morris of Columbia, MO. Joe is also survived by several nieces, nephews and cousins, and his favorite cat, Pumpkin. In addition to his parents, Joe was preceded in death by two brothers, John and James Gibbs, two sisters, Betty Cramlett and Virginia Stevenson, and a bother-in-law, Mike Unger. Due to the coronavirus pandemic, a private graveside memorial service for the immediate family only, will be held at Washington Cemetery on May 1, 2020, with Rev. Don White officiating. A celebration of life, honoring Mr. Gibbs, will be held at a later date. Memorial contributions are suggested to the Glasgow United Methodist Church or the Missouri Cancer Associates.
