Dr. Larry Peery 1941 – 2014 Well known and respected CMU faculty member and Fayette community learder, Dr. Larry Peery passed away at his home on October 10, 2014. He was 72 years of age. Larry Joe Peery was born in Moberly, MO on December 24, 1941, the son of James M. and Minnie L. Spieckerman Peery. A 1959 graduate of St. Charles High School, Dr. Peery received his Bachelor’s Degree in Physics from the Missouri School of Mines and Metallurgy (now the University of MO at Rolla) in 1963. He received his Master’s Degree and his Doctorate in Physics from Oklahoma State University at Stillwater, OK in 1967 and 1970 respectively . On May 31, 1963, Larry Peery was united in marriage to Carolyne Wilder in Overland, MO. They enjoyed 51 years together and Mrs. Peery survives of the home. While a graduate student at OSU in 1967, Dr. Peery learned, almost by chance, of a faculty position that had become available at Central College in Fayette. He accepted the position and thus began a tenure that was to reward not only Central and its students, but also the community and the state as he served 46 years as Professor of Physics and, later, as Curator of Morrison Observatory as well. Along with his work at the University, Dr. Peery was a member of the Missouri Senate Research Staff for three years and was consultant for 10 years. He directed multiple Eisenhower grants which taught public school teachers how to integrate physical science into their classrooms. He also chaired the Fayette Water-Sewer Ad Hoc Advisory Committee. A 35 year veteran of the U. S. Navy Reserve, Dr. Peery was a Blue & Gold Officer of the Naval Academy Information Officer Program. He retired in 1996 with the rank of Captain. Dr. Peery was an active member of Fayette First Christian where he worked on countless committees, taught Sunday School, served as Elder, Board Chairman, and camp counselor on numerous float trips on Missouri rivers. Among many other services to his community, he was a leader of Boy Scout Troop 62, and was member of the Fayette Rotary Club and the Fayette Round Table Club. He was named Fayette Citizen of the Year in 2014. Along with his wife, Dr. Peery leaves his son, Larry James Peery (Alicia) of Lee’s Summit and his daughter, Laura Jane Beeler of Fayette. Four grandchildren also survive; Abigail, Lucy and Tate Beeler, and Quinn Peery. He is also survived by his brother, Ralph Peery. He was preceded in death by his parents and one brother, James Michael Peery, Jr. A memorial service will be held at 2 PM, on Sunday, October 19, at the First Christian Church in Fayette with Rev. Paula Ritchie officiating. The family will receive friends from 2 to 4 PM Saturday afternoon, October 18, also at the church. Memorials are suggested to the CMU Science Dept. or the Fayette First Christian Church in care of Friemonth-Freese Funeral Service, 174 Hwy 5 &240 N. Fayette, MO 65248
