Rural Fayette resident, Pooch Schaefer, 76, died April 12, 2022. He passed away peacefully at his home, surrounded by his loving family, after a courageous five-year battle with cancer. Jerome Edward Schaefer, known to his family and friends as Pooch, was born in Chariton County, MO on March 19, 1946. He was one of 10 children born to Stephen Hubert and Anna Frances (Niekamp) Schaefer. Pooch grew up in the Aholt bottoms north of Glasgow. He attended and graduated from Glasgow High School with the class of 1964. On November 16, 1968, Pooch married the love of his life, Sheryl “Dale” Shields at St. Mary’s Church in Glasgow. They’ve enjoyed over 53 years of marriage together. Pooch worked as a farmer most of his life, farming full-time until 1978, when he took a job with American Recreation. He retired from American Rec. in 2001. Pooch loved the outdoors, hunting and fishing, and he enjoyed gardening and canning produce. He enjoyed time spent with his family, especially his grandchildren. Pooch was a member of St. Mary Catholic Church and a member of the Knights of Columbus. Survivors include his wife of the home, Sheryl Schaefer; his three children, Greg (Jessica) Schaefer, of Glasgow, MO, Marilyn (Brian) Cannon, of Lone Jack, MO, and Monica Schaefer, of Fayette, MO; six grandchildren, Aidan, Beaty and Declan Cannon, and Connor, KatiJo and Christopher Schaefer; two sisters, Mildred Brand of Glasgow, MO and Stella Niemier of Belton, MO; and a sister-in-law, Nina Bell Schaefer. He is also survived by sisters-in-law Denise Hubbard, Dana Hamilton both of Fayette, Mo, Diane Day of Glasgow, and brother-in-law Delano Shields, of Boonville. In addition to his parents, Pooch was preceded in death by four brothers, Ervin “Bud”, Melvin “Beetle”, Jim, and Steve “Junie” Schaefer, and three sisters, Jenny Rose Monnig, Angeline Noth and Nadine Monnig, and his brother-in-law Daryl (Chop) Shields. Visitation will be 5-7 PM, Sunday, April 17, 2022 at Friemonth-Freese Funeral Home in Glasgow. A Mass of Christian Burial will be 10 AM, Monday, April 18, 2022 at St. Mary Church in Glasgow, with Fr. Joshua Duncan officiating. Interment will follow the service at Boonesboro Cemetery in Franklin, MO.
