Leonard Young 1918 – 2015 Fayette resident Leonard Young passed away at University Hospital in Columbia March 9, 2015. He was 96 years of age. Leonard James Young was born August 9, 1918 in Geuda Springs, KS to Owen and Lois (Frem) Young. He graduated from Winfield, KS in 1936. That same year he joined the CCC (Civilian Conservation Corps). In 1938 he moved to Chicago. He worked at International Paper Co. in Cicero, IL for fifteen years. Leonard served in the U.S. Army Air Force from 1942 to 1945 in the European-African-Middle Eastern Theater. Leonard married Rosemary Hansen September 14, 1946 at St. Nicholas Catholic Church in Evanston, IL. They lived in Oak Lawn, IL for several years. In 1953 the couple moved to Northeast Howard County on a farm off State Rt. O. Leonard set up a Grade A Dairy operation and they were in the dairy business for nearly 15 years. Leonard also worked for building contractor, Gus Vandecnocke and for Schnell’s Greenhouse. He was a 4-H project leader for several years. He enjoyed gardening and bowling. He volunteered at the Fayette Senior Center for nearly 30 years, and has delivered meals to eligible individuals in Armstrong and Fayette. He has been on the Board of Directors for F.S.C. for several terms and served as treasurer for six years. Leonard is a 30 year member of White-Bell American Legion, Post 273, and has served as Post Commander four different times. He served on the Board of Directors of the Fayette Housing Authority for a number of years. He was also a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church. Besides his wife Rosemary he is survived by his children, Beverly Markland of Fayette, Richard Young of Dallas, GA, Raymond (Kelly) Young of Gladewater, TX, Karen (Greg) Frink of Fayette and Edward (Sharon) Young of Columbia, 10 Grandchildren, Rebecca (Jake) Bruton, Tara Young, Adam (Kelli) Young, Daniel and Erin Young, Amanda (Taylor) Frevert, Cody Frink, Eric, Aaron and Evan Young, 8 Great Grandchildren, Noah, Jack, Lane, Logan, Aubri, Abram, Hunter and Baylee, 2 brothers, Gale Young of Homer Glen, IL and Melvin (Edna) Young of Albuquerque, NM, 2 sisters, Lucille McNeece of Lawrence, KS and Joyce Buckey of High Ridge, MO. Visitation will be 5 to 7 PM, Thursday evening March 12 at the Friemonth-Freese Funeral Chapel in Fayette. Burial with military honors will be 2 PM, Friday, March 13 at Jacksonville Veteran’s Cemetery in Jacksonville, MO. A Memorial Mass will be 10 AM, Saturday, March 14, 2015 at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Fayette with Father Robert Duesdieker officiating.
