Charlie Westhues

Glasgow, MO, resident Charles Westhues, age 77, passed away at the University of Missouri Hospital in Columbia on April 15, 2024.

Charles Lee Westhues was born on April 1, 1947, in Boonville, MO. He was one of seven children born to the late Raymond Joseph and Mardell Bernice (Pund) Westhues.  Charlie graduated from St. Joseph High School in Salisbury with the class of 1965. Following graduation, Charlie enlisted with the U.S. Air Force. He was based at March Air Force Base in California and served with the Strategic Air Command. Charlie proudly served his country for four years and was honorably discharged in April 1970. On May 26, 1973, Charlie married the love of his life, Joyce Aholt, at St. Mary Church in Glasgow. This past year, the couple celebrated 50 years of marriage together. Charlie held several jobs throughout his career, but he primarily worked as a mail carrier for the U.S. Postal Service. He delivered mail to the town of Keytesville for 21 years until retirement. Charlie also worked as a parts sales representative for Glasgow Equipment and LaCross Lumber.  Charlie enjoyed tinkering and fixing up antique John Deere tractors when he was able. He spent his summers watching and pulling tractors at antique tractor pulls with his family and fellow pullers.  He enjoyed hunting, fishing, and dabbling in taxidermy.  He was also an avid St. Louis Cardinals fan.  Charlie was a member of St. Mary Church in Glasgow and a member of the Knights of Columbus.

Survivors include his wife of the home, Joyce Westhues; four children, Mitchell (Ashley) Westhues of Centralia, MO, Ann (Eric) Watring of Pilot Grove, MO, Janet Westhues of Carrollton, MO and Matt (Amanda) Westhues of Marshall, MO; one granddaughter, Morgan Westhues; two brothers, Anthony (Pat) Westhues and Tom (Jenny) Westhues, both of Glasgow; four sisters, Carolyn (Tony) Monnig, Patricia (David) Hackman, Dorothy Anderson, all of Glasgow, and Jeanette (Herman) Gieringer of Marshall, MO. In addition to his parents, Charlie was preceded in death by an infant son, Mark Westhues.

Visitation will be 5-7 PM on Thursday, April 18, 2024, at Friemonth-Freese Funeral Home in Glasgow. Mass of Christian Burial will be 10 AM on Friday, April 19, 2024, at St. Mary Catholic Church in Glasgow, with Fr. Joshua Duncan officiating. Burial with full military honors will follow the service at Washington Cemetery.
